    The Catholic Cerimony

    The Catholic wedding ceremony includes also the Civil ceremony.It sia called the Concordat wedding because it is based on the agreement between the Vatican and the Italian state.
    The procedures taken for the Civil ceremony are also necessary for the Catholic ceremony.There are also other requirements:
    - A certificate stating the participation of the bride to be and groom in a marriage course provided by the church.This course is available at your local church or in another diocese of your  choice.Usually the course does not take more than two months.
    - A certificate of Baptism for wedding use that is not dated more than six months previously.The document is issued by the church where the Baptism took place.If you are unable to optain a recent Baptism certificate,you can go to your priest with another person(who must be a Christian)who will confirm your Baptism.

    - Proof of Free Ecclesiastic State.This is necessary if one of the couple,after the age of 16,has been resident in a different diocese to where he or she is resident now.The local priest gathers evidence from two people who have known the bride and groom during this period in another diocese.If there are no witnesses the proof is given by a promise made by that person..
    Publications of the Wedding Banns
    After the presentation of these certificates,the priest gives to the couple a request for the Civil publication of the wedding banns in the Municipality.The Civil State official will then emit a certificate of the published wedding banns. This document together with the religious certificates,will than be taken to the local priest who will question the bride and groom separately in what is known as the consent. After this the priest emits the Religious banns, the publications which provides information about the couple and states where they intend

    to marry.These are published in the diocese or in both dioceses if the couple do not come from the same one.If the couple have decided to marry in a different diocese to their own,their local priest must emit a module that is authorized by the Curia and which will then be consigned to the diocese where they plan to marry.After the nuptial celebration,the priest will fill out the Marriage Certificate in an original duplicate and within five days a copy will be sent to the Municipality Official of where the ceremony took place.The Municipality Official records this Act and the following day communicates the execution of it to the priest.The state allows different religions other than the Roman Catholic Church.

    The Jewish Ceremony

    The Venetian Synagogue
    The Jewish Ghetto in Venice is the oldest in the world and dates back to 1516.There are 4 Synagogues in Venice, all of different sizes:3 are Ashkenazi and 1 is Sefadita (Schola Spagnola). The interiors of the Schola Spagnola are awe inspiring, a mixture of Byzantine and Venetian. It can take up to 250 people but is also perfect for a small intimate ceremony. The Chuppah used for the ceremony dates back hundreds of years.

    For the couple who wish to celebrate their wedding in Venice, the Schola Spagnola is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful Synagogues in Italy.

    INFORMATION CONCERNING THE CELEBRATION OF A WEDDING IN A SYNAGOGUE IN VENICE
    1. Our Community is Orthodox and we follow the Sephardic minhag. There is no problem, however, about people of any minhag wishing to get married in our Community.
    2. We have five Synagogues.  Schola Spagnola, Schola Levantina, Schola Italiana, Schola Tedesca, Schola Canton. These Synagogues are all in the Ghetto. There are no specific rules regarding the use of any of our Synagogues, apart from those deriving from their being Orthodox. During the wedding however, women are dispensed from the use of the women’s gallery: men and women are allowed to stand sit, in the Synagogue hall, on opposite sides.
    3. Guests are permitted to attend the service according to the bride and bridegroom’s choice.
    4. The ceremony is performed in Hebrew, like the local use. Any change of the ceremony has to be agreed with the Chief Rabbi.
    5. We provide the Chuppah (an ancient and precious one) a  silver  quiddush  cup,  from  our ancient collection, too, and the glass to be broken at the end of the ceremony.
    6. We provide a printed Ketubbah.
    7. The date of the wedding should be fixed in agreement with our Rabbi, also to avoid those periods of the year when, by Jewish Law, the ceremony cannot take place and any other possible impediment.
    8. It is customary to arrange a quiddush for the wedding-guests in our Community Center, which is just a few steps from any of the five Synagogues. The hall, there, can hold 100 people and as many the adjoining garden. It is possible to arrange for a Kosher quiddush. Fees would vary depending on number of people invited and on the kind of food etc.
    9. The fee include the service, in the Synagogue of the Rabbi and Hazzan, halachic control and verification of documents (see N. 10), use the Miqwe, printed ketubbah, preparation of the Chuppah, cleaning of the Synagogue before and after the service, security service at the entrance of the Synagogue throughout the service, use of the Community Center Hall, mail and telephone or fax expenses, etc.
    10. As to halachic matters, which are within the sole province of our Rabbi, Rav Elia Richetti, the following are the documents to be produced:
    a) written certificates from an Orthodox Rabbi attesting the Jewishness of bride  - and bridegroom to-be;;
    b) Ketubboth of the bride’s and the groom’s parent’s weddings;
    c) te, dhath rawquth, that are  certificate of single status issued by an orthodox Beth-Din; and an orthodox attesting if Jewishness.
    11. The marriage celebrated in our Synagogue is religious. We are not authorized to celebrate civil marriages other than with Italian citizens. The couple should then provide for that by themselves, either in Venice or in their own country.
    12. Our own Rav and the Hazzan act as witnesses. Witnesses, in any case, must be shomereimitzvoth.
    13. As to the miqwe, the bride-to-be can perform the mitzvah here or in her own Community; in this latter case, she should produce a certificate, dated not more than four days before the wedding-ceremony, attesting that the mitzvah was performed.
